Colorado has eleven national forests and four national parks. From Rocky Mountain National Park outside of Denver to San Juan National Forest in the southwest corner of the state, there is some of the best camping, hiking, river rafting, fishing and mountain biking in the country.
Breckenridge is one of the top mountain biking destinations in Colorado, with over 800 miles of trails in a 25-mile radius. The Peaks Trail is a great intermediate ride. Expert riders should try the 20-mile Keystone Resort Bike Park trail. But everyone (whether you’re mountain biking, hiking or flower picking) should head to Breckenridge Brewery or Broken Compass Brewing for refreshments afterwards.
Durango has some of the oldest mountain biking shops in the country and over 300 miles of trails ranging from desert to alpine. And try the Durango Brewing Co. or Ska Brewing Co. for apres-riding relaxation. Yes, Colorado has a ridiculously large number of micro-breweries. If beer is your thing, you will not be disappointed in the selection.
But if there’s one thing that Colorado really has in spades, its altitude, including America’s highest incorporated town, Alma, at 10,578 feet. Oh, and Alma is at the foot of no less than three 14,000-foot peaks. If you’re feeling frisky, book a Tentrr campsite there. Happy hiking.
